SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Men's Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach Pat Tyson announced the signing of Hayden Roberts to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday. Roberts is set to join the Zags next fall as the GU men look to push a fifth-straight NCAA Championships appearance in 2024.
Hayden Roberts | Ephrata, Wash. | Ephrata High School
Roberts joins the Zags from just two hours away in Ephrata, Wash. after a sixth place individual finish at the WIAA State Cross Country 2A meet on Nov. 4. Despite Ephrata High School not competing as a team, Roberts' finish marks his highest state finish, after placing 10th in 2022 and 21st in 2021. On the track, Roberts placed second in the 1600m at the WIAA State Track & Field meet this spring with a PR time of 4:16.44, following up a CWAC/GSL Regional Championships win just one week prior. In addition at the state meet, Roberts placed fourth in the 800m with a 1:55.42 PR time and was a member of the 4x400 relay that won the state title this spring. He will stay in-state to join Gonzaga next fall.
"From the beginning, Gonzaga has been a dream school. Staying close to home and attending a college that is a powerhouse academically and athletically were both important factors in my decision," Roberts said. "I had a great time on my visit and I quickly discovered the culture of the program is something truly special! Getting to meet the team and Coach Tyson really helped solidify my decision for the future! I look forward to the years to come, go Zags!"
Tyson on Roberts: "Love this young prospect from Ephrata, Washington. He is very athletic and will develop into a terrific distance runner at Gonzaga," Tyson said. "Hayden has great range from the 800m up to the steeplechase and cross country. We are excited to get him here!"
