
Garcia, Zags take third at USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Gonzaga's Kristen Garcia took third place in the six-kilometer cross country race at the San Francisco Invitational Saturday, propelling the Bulldogs to a third-place team finish overall.
In her first collegiate race of the fall, Garcia crossed the finish line in 21:21.1 to finish five seconds behind second-place finisher Ruby Smee of San Francisco. Nevada freshman Tierney Wolfgram took first, beating Smee by 28.1 seconds with a 20:47.9 time. San Francisco took first in the team score with 45 points, followed by Stanford with 52 and the Bulldogs in third with 97 after winning a tiebreaker with Santa Clara.
Alicia Anderson (22:19.8), Makenna Edwards (22:19.9), Liz Hogan (22:20.0) and Brittney Hansen (22:20.1) all finished within tenths of a second of each other to take 25th-28th place, and Lauren Haas came just behind in 22:21.5 to claim 30th.
"We're really pleased with how the day went," said GU head coach Jake Stewart. "Our objectives for the day were met. The group followed the plan perfectly and we're excited to get back to work this next week."
The Bulldogs race again at the Cougar Classic in Colfax, Wash. on Sep. 10 in hopes of defending their team title from 2019. Check GoZags.com for up-to-date results and race time information.
