Men’s golf in 10th place entering final round
BEALLSVILLE, Md. — The Gonzaga men's golf team is in 10th place after the first two rounds of the Georgetown Intercollegiate at Four Streams Golf Club.
The Zags are 17-over (585) heading into the final round on Monday. GU totaled 14-over (298) in the first round before finishing at three-over (287) in Round 2.
Gonzaga's Jace Minni finished the day with scores of two-over (73) and one-under (70). He made 22 pars and seven birdies on the day, going three-under on the course's Par-3 holes. Minni is tied for 16th at one-over (143).
Charlie Magruder is four-over (146) through the first two rounds. He finished five-over (76) in Round 1 before a turning in a score of one-under (70) in the afternoon round.
Matthew Ruel is tied for 34th at five-over (147). He made 13 pars in the first round, ending at four-over (75), and 12 pars in the second round, carding a 72 (+1). Clayton Thatcher (+8, 150) and Grant Johnson (+9, 151) are in 47th and 49th place.
"Par 5 scoring was a huge improvement over our last event, which has been an area of focus," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Our first round really put us in a hole. We did aright in the par 5's and par 3's but our par 4 scoring average was the difference today. A lot of the bogeys were just bad bogies, including ones from the fairway and with short clubs in our hands. Others stemmed from really errant tee shots. The second round was a big improvement and closer to how we are capable of playing.
"Jace was the most consistent ball striker ahead of Matt. He looked every bit in control today. Matt got a bad break today when he hit his tee shot down the left rough of number 8 and didn't find it until 10 seconds after time expired. He ended up with a triple bogey after the penalty. That was a tough pill to swallow but he did a good job handling it."
Loyola Maryland's Brandon Berry sits atop the leaderboard at 11-under (131), while Delaware's Roberto Nieves and Howard University's Everett Whiten Jr. are both four strokes back. As a team, Loyola Maryland leads by 20 strokes at 19-under (549) heading into Monday's round.
The final round tees off at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time Monday. Live scoring will be available at GoZags.com.
