Ruel and Zags Both Finish in Fourth in California

Ruel ties for fourth at four-over; GU climbs three spots
JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. – Gonzaga's Matthew Ruel tied for fourth, and the Zags placed fourth as a team, at The Joust hosted by California Baptist University at the Goose Creek Golf Club.
Ruel was four-over (214) in the tournament, and three-over (73) in the third and final round Tuesday. He made three birdies and 11 pars on Day 2. Ruel's 12 birdies in the event matched the second-most in the 85-golfer field.
Zach Stocker had a Top-20 finish, tying for 17th at 10-over (220). He was six-over (76) in the third round. Brentt Salas and Grant Johnson tied for 27th and 31st. Salas was eight-over (78) in the final round, while Johnson carded a 75 (+5).
Chris Mogg tied for 82nd at 34-over (244). Holden Backes played as an individual and finished in a tie for 36th at 17-over (227). He was nine-over (79) in Round 3.
"Course was a real challenge today," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Wind was steady at 20-25 and gust at 30+. The guys did a great job embracing the conditions and moving up the board. Great week by Matt and Zach finishing T4 and T17. Pretty good showing for Brentt, Grant and Holden, as well to start the year."
Gonzaga rose three spots on the team leaderboard in the final round. The Bulldogs were 22-over (302) in the third round, and finished 45-over (885).
Witchayapat Sinsrang led Omaha to the team title, after capturing medalist honors. He was the lone golfer to finish the tournament under-par at two-under (208). He was two-over (72) in the final round. Pepperdine's Joshua McCarthy was second at two-over (212). Cal Poly placed second as a team at 39-over (879).
The Zags are at the Grand Canyon Invitational March 13-14, in Phoenix, Ariz. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
