Gonzaga begins season with best-ever preseason ranking
NEW ORLEANS – The Gonzaga men's cross country team starts the 2019 season with the program's best-ever preseason regional ranking at No. 7, the USTFCCCA released Monday.
The No. 7 ranking in the West Region also matches the highest position in the poll in program history. The Zags climbed to seventh in the fifth week last season, and once during the 2014 season. Last year, GU opened at No. 9 in the region, before finishing the season in ninth.
The Bulldogs bring back plenty of talent and experience this season. Four of Gonzaga's top five finishers at the 2018 NCAA West Regionals return this year, including sophomore James Mwaura, who was named All-Region last season.
National publication, Stride Report, ranked the Gonzaga men No. 24 in its national preseason ranking recently. The USTFCCCA national preseason poll will be released Tuesday.
The Zags open their 2019 schedule at the annual Clash of the Inland Northwest in Cheney, Wash., Saturday. The men's 6K race begins at 10:30 a.m., following the women's 4K race, which starts at 10.
