Zag freshman runs 16th-fastest time in region
STANFORD, Calif. — Gonzaga's James Mwaura set a new 5,000-meter school record at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field Thursday.
Mwaura crossed the line at 13:46.17 in 11th place. He finished as the third-fastest collegian in the race. It was only the freshman's third attempt at the event.
Lander Tijdgat of the Olympic Running Team placed first at 13:40.16. Stanford's Connor Lane was the top collegiate finisher in fifth place with a time of 13:42.31.
Mwaura's time currently ranks 16th in the West Region and 22nd in the country. His previous personal record was 13:57.05, set earlier this season on the same track at the Stanford Invitational on March 29. That time ranked third all-time in program history. Andrew Gardner had the previous program record at 13:52.03 set in the same race at the Stanford Invitational.
A select number of Zags will run for NCAA qualifying times in the mile and 5,000 meters at the Spokane Memorial Open at Spokane Falls Community College Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
