SPOKANE, Wash. – Director of Gonzaga Cross Country and Track and Field Pat Tyson announced the signing of Wil Smith Wednesday.
"Wil Smith is the real deal," Tyson said. "He is the complete package! He is a winner on the course, in the classroom and in the community! I'm so excited to coach this young Spokane distance runner at Gonzaga."

Smith was the 2019 WIAA State Champion, after finishing in fourth in 2018 and sixth in 2017. As one of the best runners in the state of Washington, he has posted times of 4:14 in the 1,600 meters and 9:07 for the 3,200 meters on the track. The Spokane native will look to further improve those times this spring.
In 2018, Smith qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals, one of the best high school races in the country. The two-time WIAA District 8 Cross Country Champion, also had first place finishes in 2019 at the Mountain West Classic and the Dar Walters Classic.
"I chose Gonzaga, because it is a team that has a lot of potential and has a strong focus on team success," said Smith. "The team has a cohesive and strong culture that supports both athletic and academic goals that I believe will help me grow as a student athlete, and I believe head coach Pat Tyson can help me become a better athlete and person."
