SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga men's golf head coach Robert Gray announced the addition of Brentt Salas for the 2018-19 season.
"We're excited to have Brentt join our program," Gray said. "He's a hard working young man, who comes from a very supporting family. He's traveled the world playing the game at so many different locations. That will benefit him in college, as we see a lot of different types of courses and playing conditions.
"He's a solid player who does a number of things well that you're more likely to see from a junior or senior in college than at the high school level. How a course is laid out and set up plays a key role in course management. That's an area where most incoming freshman need to learn quite a bit. When I've watched him, he's done a good job of taking notice of those areas, so he'll be ahead of the curve this fall. That will go a long way in his overall development in the coming years."

Salas joins the Zags after a stellar career at Father Duenas Memorial School in Guam. In 2017, he placed 10th at the AJGA Se Ri Pak Jr Championship and 12th at the AJGA ACDS/Ryan Moore Tournament. Salas was sixth at the 2016 Northern California Junior Championship and 18th at 2015 FCG World Championships.
"I would like to thank everybody who has supported me throughout the years. All of that support has gone a long way. I can finally say I accomplished my goal of playing for a Division I college," Salas said at a signing ceremony at Father Duenas.
Salas has competed against some of the best junior golfers and earned rankings in the IMG Junior World tournaments in San Diego, the British Junior World and APGC in Taiwan. He's also a four-time champion in the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam All-Island Golf League Championship.
"Brentt is one of the top men on our national team, as well as our top junior on our junior team," Guam National Golf Federation President Richard Sablan said at the ceremony. "We look forward to seeing Brentt continue to be part of the Guam national team; to continue to do great, big things for himself and for us. Brentt's success is also an example of what happens when a kid from the small island of Guam dreams big and reaches for the stars."
In the classroom, Salas has received top honors all four years in high school and was inducted into the Father Duenas National Honor Society.
"While competing in these off-island tournaments, I also catch the attention of some coaches," Salas said. "Lucky for me, I've been in contact with Gonzaga since the beginning of my junior year. Choosing them over other schools, my heart felt more drawn to this school than the other schools."
