Get to know Men's Soccer senior Octavio Rivas
The SAAC Student-Athlete Spotlight is a weekly series that will highlight and promote senior Zag student-athletes on and off the playing field. This week's student athlete is Octavio Rivas from the men's soccer team.
Octavio is an accounting major in the School of Business Administration. During his career, he earned President's List honors and was named WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention. We caught up with the senior defender from Orange, California, to gain some insight on his experience as a student-athlete at Gonzaga.
What is your favorite memory as a Zag?
Spending time with the team during captain's practice.
What are you hoping to do with your degree post-graduation?
Start in public accounting with a focus in the real estate industry.
Favorite Sports Team?
Juventus.
Favorite food?
Italian and Mexican.
Favorite community service event at Gonzaga?
Habitat for Humanity because we volunteered as a full team and got to see first-hand, year after year, how the homes were being occupied by families.
What do you enjoy most about playing soccer?
It's a chance to get away from day-to-day school work and just have fun playing my favorite game.
A weird fact about you that people may not know:
I've never been stung by a bee.
What were your first thoughts/feelings/emotions when competing as an NCAA Division I athlete for your first time?
These guys are huge.
What is the biggest challenge as a student-athlete?
Remembering to have fun when things aren't necessarily going as you planned.
What advice do you have for prospective Gonzaga student-athletes?
It's important to sometimes take a step back and appreciate the opportunity that has been given to you. Enjoy the student-athlete experience because very few make it this far and it will go by in the blink of an eye.
