Get to know women's rowing senior Emma Delucchi
The SAAC Student-Athlete Spotlight is a weekly series that will highlight and promote senior Zag student-athletes on and off the playing field. This week's student athlete is Emma Delucchi from the women's rowing team.
Emma is a Computer Science major, and currently holds a 3.34 GPA. She made Deans List in the fall of her freshman year and was tabbed WCC All-Academic honorable mention both her sophomore and junior years. In addition, her and her teammates placed 18th at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Emma is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and FCA.
We caught up with the senior rower from Seattle, Wash., to gain some insight on her experience as a student-athlete at Gonzaga.
What are you hoping to do with your degree post-graduation?
My dream is to work in tech at an athletic company. Ideally, I'd like to design or write apps to help people be active and enhance athletic experiences.
Favorite food?
I love fried rice! It's such a great food to make especially if you have leftovers. And it's delicious!
Favorite sports-related movie?
"Cool Runnings". It's inspirational and there's a really catchy song in it. Jamaica has a bobsled team!
What do you like most about being a student-athlete at Gonzaga?
The best thing about rowing for Gonzaga is that I feel like I have a family beyond my own sport. Instead of just having my teammates, I truly feel like the whole athletic department is my family.
What do you enjoy most about playing this sport?
Rowing, to me, is all about bettering myself. Every stroke, every meter, it's all in pursuit of a better version of myself.
A weird fact about you that people may not know:
I am very good at trivia.
What are some of your team or personal goals?
We want to be Top-25 at NCAA's, something we are close to but have not yet achieved.
What would you say is the hardest part of your sport?
Contrary to popular belief, it's not waking up super early. I think the hardest part is that you have to be "on" 24/7. Everything we do, from the moment we wake up to the moment we fall asleep, is in pursuit of being a better rower. Even when we do drills it still takes fitness and mental focus.
What is the biggest challenge as a student-athlete?
Balancing school and rowing has never felt easy. Doing one or the other would be easy, but I choose to do both. I've definitely improved on time management in the past few years, but I've never felt like it was easy.
Why is community service important to your role as a student-athlete at Gonzaga?
We cannot only think about ourselves in our lives. At some point, we have the duty to look beyond ourselves and help those when it does not benefit us.
