Get to know Men's Golf senior Tyler Munetake
The SAAC Student-Athlete Spotlight is a weekly series that will highlight and promote senior Zag student-athletes on and off the playing field. This week's student athlete is Tyler Munetake from the men's golf team.
Tyler is a Business Administration major and a Dean's List honoree. Tyler's excellence in the classroom has also been recognized by the conference as he was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic team. Tyler has also been recognized as a Cleveland/Srixon All America Scholar.
We caught up with the senior from Wailuku, Hawaii, to gain some insight on his experience as a student-athlete at Gonzaga.
What are you hoping to do with your degree post-graduation?
Financial Advising.
Favorite sports-related movie?
The Sandlot.
If you could go on a vacation, where would you go and why?
Bali, because it looks really cool and I heard everything is really cheap there.
What attracted you to Gonzaga?
The idea of community and the team members.
Favorite community service event at Gonzaga?
I always love doing Habitat for Humanity. It allows you to volunteer and see a physical end product which I find it really cool.
What do you like most about being a student-athlete at Gonzaga?
The opportunity to have a large variety of friends ranging from people involved in athletics to other people outside of it. I love the sense of community the athletic program gives.
What do you enjoy most about playing this sport?
Golf is unique in the way that you are able to compete as an individual and as a team at the same time.
Do you have any pre-game/match rituals?
I listen to a combination of obscure reggae songs and hard trap music.
What are some of the nicknames your teammates call you by?
Muneflockaflames.
What were your first thoughts/feelings/emotions when competing as a Division 1 athlete for your first time?
Pure excitement. I wanted to prove myself that I could compete at this level.
What would you say is the hardest part of your sport?
The time between shots when you aren't playing well is the hardest part, because there is so much time to doubt your abilities.
What is the biggest challenge as a student-athlete?
Time management.
Why is community service important to your role as a student-athlete at Gonzaga?
It allows us student-athletes to meet members of the community who care about all Gonzaga teams.
What advice do you have for prospective Gonzaga student-athletes?
Wherever you go, live it up for the four years.
