Piercy and McEachern place second at Sasquatch Invitational
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's and men's cross country teams both won the team titles at the 2018 Sasquatch Invitational Friday.
Aimee Piercy led the Zag women with a second place finish over the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18:57.8, while Cullen McEachern was second in the men's 8K race at 25:37.7.
In the women's race, Piercy's second place finish paced a dominating GU performance. The Bulldogs swept second through 10th in the race. Claire Gillett was third at 18:59.5. Caroline McCarthy (19:00.9) and Katherine Gustafson (19:01.7) rounded out the top five. Lauren Bourgeois crossed the line in sixth at 19:02.9.
The Gonzaga men swept second through ninth. Behind McEachern, Brandon Pollard was third with a time of 25:49.2. Hunter Simpson (25:52.4) and Phillip Fishburn (25:55.3) were fourth and fifth, and Luke Mason came in sixth at 25:56.9.
The event's host, Spokane Falls Community College, placed second in both races, while Whitworth was third. Along with unattached runners, Eastern Washington also had a couple of women's runners in the invitational. Unattached Gonzaga men's runner Jake Perrin placed first with a time of 25:17.3. Micaela Kostecka of SFCC won the women's race at 18:40.3.
"The 2K loop was tougher than we thought, with some tough gradual uphills," Director of GU Cross Country Pat Tyson said. "Still, a nice job by Gonzaga today! The cool thing about this team is that we won all five regional meets! That's never been done before in the program's history. I'm really proud of our whole team, now it is off to Provo!"
The Zags travel to Provo, Utah, for the West Coast Conference Championships on Oct. 27. Live results will be available on GoZags.com.
