Bulldogs Start Season with Strong Win

SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga University women's tennis team began the 2018 season Sunday, brushing past Montana State 7-0 inside The Stevens Center in Spokane.
GU dominated the dual, winning eight of the nine contests played. They began the match with a pair of doubles victories to claim the doubles point. Sophie Whittle and Graciela Rosas swept past Laura Mary and Emma Podeur 6-0, and Alex Bourguignon and Haruna Tsuruta clinched the point with a 6-1 win on court two.
Bourguignon continued that hot play into singles, winning all 12 games against Podeur on court five. Whittle followed up with a big two-set victory atop the lineup, and Kate Ketels clinched the dual at No. 6 singles. The sophomore defeated Montana State's Sara Iverson 6-1, 6-2.
Domonique Garley, Tsuruta, and Rosas then capped off their matches in two sets to complete the singles sweep.
"It was a good start to the season," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "The girls handled themselves well and did what they needed to do. Now we get to focus on a big weekend in Michigan."
The Zags are back on the court next weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Kick-Off Weekend. GU will face No. 10 Michigan Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific (10:00 a.m. Eastern). The next day, they'll face either Brown or Tulsa. This will be Gonzaga's first time participating in the annual Kick-Off event.
