OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Gonzaga redshirt senior defender Jalen Crisler was one of thirty national candidates selected for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate men's soccer.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
As a fifth-year senior captain for the Zags, Jalen is strong in all four areas identified by the Senior CLASS Award. He is the only player chosen from the West Coast Conference.
Jalen currently holds a 3.69 cumulative GPA and will be finishing up his bachelor's in business administration degree with concentrations in marketing and finance this fall. He has earned his way on to the Dean's List four times, and President's List three times. Throughout his career, Jalen has been named to the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll List each year, and received WCC All-Academic Team honors in 2016 and was selected WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2015.
As a senior team captain, Jalen is constantly encouraging, motivating, and helping his teammates both on and off the field. He displays tremendous leadership in all that he does and possesses a tireless work ethic that sets the standard for success for the program. Individually, Jalen strives to bring out the best in others and carries himself in a way that friends, peers, and family respect and admire.
Since his arrival at Gonzaga, Jalen has been involved in countless community outreach activities, as well as being a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee the past three years. He has helped build houses through Habitat for Humanity on several occasions, participated in events with Catholic Charities such as Trunk-or-Treat and Food & Clothing Drive collections, and volunteered his time for Relay for Life in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, to name a few. He is determined to make an impact on those around him and has been successful in getting his teammates involved more the past few years as well.
Jalen was selected Preseason All-WCC this year and was selected First Team All-WCC last year. Crisler was third on the team last season with 24 shots, sixth with seven points and fourth with three goals. He was also selected All-WCC Honorable Mention in 2014. From the center back position, he has scored a goal and has two assists this season. He anchors a defense that has pitched two shutouts and allowed one goal or less four times.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2017 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
