Zags Take Third In Heat At San Diego Crew Classic

FULL SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC RESULTS
SAN DIEGO/SEATTLE - The Gonzaga Bulldogs competed in both the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego and the Husky Open on the Montlake Cut in Seattle on Saturday. The San Diego Crew Classic continues on Sunday as well with the finals. The GU varsity eight traveled to San Diego and Gonzaga entered their second varsity eight and third varsity eight boats in the Husky Open.
The San Diego Crew Classic has matured into the largest regatta in the world held for primarily eight-oared rowing shells.
The varsity eight competed in the first heat of the American Specialty Health Cal Cup early Saturday morning, and raced to a third place finish at 6:28.00, 15 seconds behind first place UC San Diego and 11 seconds back of second place Grand Valley. GU glided in ahead of Cal Maritime and Long Beach State in that heat, and had a faster time than UC Davis, UCLA, Purdue, Alabama, San Diego State, Humboldt State, Chapman, Vanderbilt, Boston College, and Colorado in the Cal Cup. With that finish, the Zags are placed into the Petite Final tomorrow at 10:40 am.
"The second half of the race was good, but we are giving up to much in the first 500 meters," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "We need to be in the mix earlier in the race if we are going to have success."
In Seattle, the second varsity eight and third varsity eight GU boats both recorded second place finishes behind host Washington. The second varsity eight came in at 6:14.23, 18 seconds behind the Huskies, and the third varsity eight finished at 6:33.22, 44 seconds behind UW. The Bulldogs defeated Western Washington and Washington State in both races, in that order.
Joining GU in the Petite Final at 10:40 am tomorrow are Cal Maritime, UCLA, Purdue, MIT, UC Irvine, Vanderbilt, and SDSU.
