PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga men's golfer David Ganz climbed the leaderboard in the final round of the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate and finished tied for sixth Tuesday. The event was hosted by Washington State University on its Palouse Ridge Golf Course.
Ganz carded a 67 (-4) in the third and final round, and finished even-par (213) in the tournament. The junior had his career-best round and matched the third-lowest round in program history. Ganz was four-under on the front-nine and ended the round with six birdies. He was even-par on Par 3 holes in the tournament, which ranked fourth in the 83-golfer field. The Portland, Ore. native, was tied for 21st after the second round.
"I'm so happy for David," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "He's been striking the ball well since the school year started and it's great to see him put it all together. He didn't play his absolute best this week by any means, but his maturity showed today after starting with a double bogey and then staying patient to bring it back to a final round of four-under par, 67.
As a team, the Bulldogs also climbed the leaderboard. GU entered the final day in a tie for 10th, and rose to seventh after the last round. Gonzaga was three-under (287) in the third round, and finished the event at 30-over (882).
"We got through our nerves yesterday and the guys came out and played much better today," Gray said. "We continued to make good decisions on the course, which enabled us to moved up the leaderboard. It wasn't the overall finish we were looking for but we improved each day and did really well in a number of different areas that we've been working on the past couple of weeks."
Nick Nolan, Angus Montgomery and Ryan Gaske all finished the tournament at eight-over (221) in a tie for 43rd. Montgomery, playing as an individual, was one-under (70) Tuesday. He also had six birdies in Round 3. Nolan was two-over (73) on the final day. The freshman completed a solid first collegiate tournament with 12 pars in Round 3. He had 37 in the event. Gaske was three-over (74) with an eagle on the par-five ninth hole in the final round. The senior was five-under on the course's par-five holes, which ranked fourth in the tournament.
Tyler Munetake tied for 48th as an individual at 10-over (223). He was six-over (77) in Round 3. Chris Mogg (+20, 233) and Ben DuBois (+21, 234) were tied for 71st and 73rd. Both had their lowest rounds of the tournament, DuBois was two-over (73) and Mogg was four-over (75) Tuesday.
"Both the freshman, Nick and Chris had a good week," Gray said. "Nick played pretty solid each round. Take out his two bad holes in the first round and he finishes in the Top-15 for his first event, which is pretty good for freshman's first event. Chris also had some big numbers in the first round and settled down in the final two. He didn't score as well as he would've liked but he just wasn't making the putts throughout the event that he normally does. Looking at his overall game this week, I like what's ahead for him this season.
"Angus put together a solid score today to end his week. He didn't strike the ball the way he wanted but he got it around the course under par. The bottom line is, that's what matters. Ryan was steady over the three rounds, which is back to his norm. He expects lower numbers of himself but it's a definite improvement over last year. His numbers will come down as the season progresses."
Washington State took the team title for the fifth consecutive year. The Cougars were the lone team under-par in the tournament at 10-under (842). Utah was second at nine-over.
Nick Mandell of Washington State took medalist honors as an individual. He was two-over (73) in the final round and ended the tournament at 10-under (210). He held off two golfers with the one-stroke win.
"We've got about 10 days before our next event at Colorado," Gray said. "It'll be a good field and I feel we can do well there as long as we stick to our process and course management strategies."
Gonzaga travels to Erie, Colo., for the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Sept. 26-27. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
