PORT OF SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gonzaga's men's rowing team won two of three races against UC Davis on Tuesday at the Port of Sacramento, Calif.
Gonzaga's Varsity 8 squad was edged by just 0.4 seconds, but the Junior Varsity 8 took a big victory and the Third Varsity 8 squeezed by with a 0.2-second edge over UC Davis.
The V8 squad turned in a time of 6:16.2, just behind the Aggies' 6:15.8.
"The V8 is still a work in progress," head coach Dan Gehn said. "We didn't do enough work in the first 1000 to control the race. We had a good last 750 coming back a full length, but came up short at the line."
The JV8 squad had a dominating performance, winning by 31 seconds. GU turned in a time of 6:34.4 to put distance between itself and UCD's time of 7:05.6. In the 3V8 race, the Zags' had to battle back in the race and came out ahead at the finish line with a time of 6:41.4. The Aggies were less than a quarter-second back at 6:41.6.
"The JV had a really aggressive solid race, but I am really proud of the 3V," Gehn said. "They trailed most of the race by one to three seats and were trading moves with Davis. Our guys then put on a burst in the last 200 and took the lead to win on the last stroke of the race."
Gonzaga will continue its Spring Break trip with a scrimmage before heading to Washington State on March 19.
