Phillips finished with a time of 4:05.28, the fastest outdoor mile in school history. He nearly missed his goal of the illustrious four-minute mile barrier, the most significant time goal in American track and field.
"Andy ran a bit tentative," Gonzaga Director of Track Pat Tyson said. "He did have a great personal record, along with the fastest Zag outdoor mile ever! He just needs to run more self-belief. On the positive side, Andy just keeps getting better! He has Provo up next."
Phillips placed third in his heat behind Justin Kent of British Columbia (4:04.99) and Portland's Ryan Poland (4:05.00). Oregon's Eric Jenkins (3:58.09) and Will Geoghegan (3:57.53) came in first and second.
Entering Friday's race, Phillips' best outdoor mile time was 4:07.24, ran at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on April 3. The Jackson Hole, Wyo. native, ran his best indoor mile this season at 4:11.12, third on the GU all-time list, during the Husky Classic.
Phillips, the program record holder in the 800 meters, has a personal record time of 3:46.77 in the 1,500 meters. That time is currently third on the school's all-time list. He ran that time last season at the West Coast Invite. The senior ran his best time this year is at Hayward Field during the Oregon Relays at 3:49.08.
Phillips and a select number of Bulldogs travel to Provo, Utah, for the BYU Last Chance Invitational on Thursday. Live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.
