SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga track student-athlete, Willie Milam, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Track and Field/Cross Country Team Friday.
Milam receives the honor selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Milam, business administration major has 3.98 cumulative GPA.
Milam returns to the 5,000-meter field at the NCAA West Preliminaries for the second straight season. The senior broke the program record at the Stanford Invitational on April 3, with a time of 13:53.74, which is seeded 26th in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships.
Milam also set a new 10,000-meter school record at the Mt. SAC Relays this season with a time of 29:49.78. He became the first runner in program history to run a sub-30 minute 10K. The Portland, Ore. native is also second on the GU all-time list in the 1,500 meters and fifth on the 800-meter list.
"Willie epitomizes excellence in all he does," Gonzaga Director of Track Pat Tyson said. "He is an absolute winner as a student-athlete! I'm proud and so happy for Willie."
The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the fourth year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored.
Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be announced on June 25.
The NCAA West Preliminaries, hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, released the top-48 declared student-athletes in each event Thursday. The East region will be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 competitors from each individual event at the region meets qualify for the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 10-13, in Eugene, Ore.
Milam races in the 5,000-meter semifinals on May 30, at 8:45 p.m. Central Time. The top five finishers from each heat, and the next two fastest times, advance to the NCAA final in Eugene.
