Men's Crew Wraps Season at Western Sprints

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Gonzaga Men's Rowing team earned a victory in the Second Varsity 8+ boat and put a wrap on their season at the Western Sprints Championships on Saturday in Gold River, Calif.
Competing for a spot at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, the Varsity 8+ needed a top-two finish, but came in fifth. The Zags' Second Varsity turned in another strong performance taking victory by more than five seconds in their five-boat race.
"The 2V8 carried the day," head coach Dan Gehn said. "They really laid down some shots in the middle 1,000 (meters) to an open-water win."
The V8+ team of Danielle Moorhouse, Joe Morris, Alex Lund, Bryce Dillon, Alex Yuska, Ben Duermit, Eric Engel, Carsten Beckwith-Strike and Dylan Ojeda finished fifth with a time of 6:26.3.
"The Varsity had a solid race and was in the mix for the first 1,250 (meters), but got out-sprinted in the last 500 (meters)," Gehn said.
In the 2V8+ race, the GU crew of Steven Peterson, Cole Garcia, Walker Capra-Smith, Connor Murray, Atticus Patterson, Connor Nash, Kyle Hagmeier, Devin Billy and Quinn Nash took a wide victory with a time of 6:27.0.
The Zags Third Varsity 8+ gained valuable experience in their race, coming in fifth with a time of 6:45.5 from the team of Max Baker, Connor Mitchell, Keagan Tice, Jon Sailer, Matt Hoitink, Max Sombrowski, Kale Reichersamer, Connor Heffernan and James Ferris.
