Men's Crew Opens Spring Season in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The Gonzaga men's crew team opens its spring season in San Diego, Calif., facing the University of San Diego and UC-San Diego at Mission Bay on Friday.
The Gonzaga boats will hit the water at 7:30 a.m. with the Varsity 8+, followed by the junior varsity 8+, third varsity 8+ and freshman 8+ in 15-minute increments. The race will be run from south to north on the west side of Fiesta Island from the UCSD-USD Boathouse.
"We've had a good Spring so far," head coach Dan Gehn said. "The weather allowed us to get to the lake earlier so have had a bit more quality water time than normal. That being said we are still a young team but I feel we have some talent. We only graduated two rowers and a coxswain last year and brought in some exceptional frosh."
Gehn's squad is coming off a fall season which included wins over Washington State in back-to-back weeks, a third-place finish at the Head of the Lake and a second-place finish at the Head of the Snake from the varsity 8+ boat.
"This is always a good early season race experience, but there is a lot of water time and speed to be had between now and our championships in May."
