Regatta Information
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga men's and women's rowing teams hit the road to the west side of the state for the annual Head of the Lake regatta in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday.
The 5,000-meter course spans parts of both Lake Union and Lake Washington. The course begins in Lake Union, then crosses through Portage Bay and Union Bay before making a turn in Lake Washington and finishing back in Union Bay.
On the women's side, this will be Gonzaga's final regatta of the fall season, and will also amount to its biggest test. They'll go up against Pac-12 foes Washington State, Washington and Oregon State, as well as Canadian collegiate champion University of British Columbia and Seattle U. Both UW (4th) and WSU (8th) finished in the top 10 of the final CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll at the end of last season, while Oregon State was receiving votes. Comparatively, the Zags ended last season with a program-best No. 17 ranking.
"The purpose of the fall season is to build a base for the spring and check your progress to speed," women's head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "It's been positive in all boats and this weekend will give us another good data point that we can use as a springboard."
The GU women will put four boats on the water on the day with single entries in the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8, as well as two entries in the Third Varsity 8. The V8 is scheduled for 8:07 a.m., followed by the 2V8 at 8:10 a.m. and the 3V8 at 8:17 a.m.
On the men's side, Gonzaga will face similarly tough competition in Washington, Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford and Oregon from the Pac-12. Those squads will be joined by Western Washington in the top men's collegiate race.
"We are taking over four eights and this is the first big race for a lot of these guys so they are excited," men's head coach Dan Gehn said. "I felt last week we weren't particularly aggressive in our races so we will look to do a better job with that this time around. We have had a great week of practice so I'm looking forward to the racing this weekend."
Gonzaga's men are in their second to last race of the fall, as they'll take on Washington State next week as well. But for the Head of the Lake, GU will put also put four boats on the water. Like the women, the men will compete in the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 and have two entries in the Third Varsity 8. The V8 will race at 8 a.m. in the first race of the day, followed by the 2V8 at 8:03 a.m. and the 3V8 at 8:13 a.m.
