PULLMAN, Wash.--The Gonzaga University men's rowing team wrapped up the fall schedule in dominant fashion Saturday, sweeping Washington State in the Head of the Snake at Wawawai Landing in Pullman.
Gonzaga won each and every race with at least 10 seconds to spare. The Varsity 8 boat took the waters first, navigating the 5,000 meter course in 15:24.7, 23 seconds faster than the Cougars. That time also the crew's fastest of the season at the distance. The Freshman/Novice 8 boat beat WSU by 31 seconds at 16:27.0 to 16:58.1, and the Third Varsity 8 crew beat both WSU boats by over a minute and a half and two minutes, respectively. Additionally, the marks for both the Freshman/Novice 8 and the Third Varsity 8 were season bests.
The closest contest of the day came against the Second Varsity Eight+ squads, where Gonzaga out-rowed WSU by 11 seconds at 16:12.9 to 16:23.9. The time was also the Bulldog 2V8's best of the season.
"We raced well today; conditions were good and we took advantage of that," said Gonzaga men's rowing head coach Dan Gehn. "I was very pleased with our effort."
The Bulldogs will now rest the oars for the remainder of the winter. Their next competition will be March 5, 2016 when they take on Oregon State, Stanford, and Victoria on Dexter Lake in Eugene, Ore.
