PORTLAND, Ore. -- Gonzaga's men's rowing team came in second behind Oregon State in its top boats on Sunday at the Portland Fall Classic in Portland, Ore.
Rowing on the Willamette River in downtown Portland, the Zags battled Oregon State down the 5,000-meter course, but came in behind the Beavers. Along with second-place finishes by the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8, GU's Novice 8 took a victory in its race.
"It was a solid race for us today," head coach Dan Gehn said. "We will look to pick up some speed this week for the Head of the Lake next weekend."
In the Varsity 8 boat, the Zags crew of Max Baker, Cole Garcia, Walker Capra-Smith, Alex Yuska, Jack Arata, Connor Murray, Bryce Dillon, Connor Nash and Atticus Patterson posted a time of 16:19.27 compared to OSU's time of 15:54.48.
Two GU crews and two Oregon State crews made up the four-boat Second Varsity 8 race. Gonzaga's team of Steven Peterson, Quinn Nash, Connor Mitchell, Zach Umsted, Carsten Beckwith-Strike, Jon Sailer, Brandon Fairhurst, Luke Edwards and Kale Reichersamer had a second-place time of 16:37.72. GU's Doug Kempthorne, Joao Lasalvia, Robert Hyndiuk, Paul Hurst, Josh Hoidn, Anthony Adamek, Max Sombrowski and Zach Weber were fourth at 18:13.45.
The GU Novice crew of Daniel Li, Luke Edwards, Robert Hyndiuk, Zach Umsted, Brandon Fairhurst, Paul Hurst, Matt Peterson, Anthony Adamek and Zach Weber earned a win over Oregon State, Seattle U. and Portland State with a time of 17:27.75.
Gonzaga will be back on the water at the Head of the Lake in Seattle, Wash., next weekend on Sunday, Nov. 8.
