SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga rowing squads turned in a solid day of competition against Washington State on Saturday morning at the Head of the Spokane on the Spokane River.
The GU men's Varsity 8 crew turned in the fastest time of the day on the way to a win over WSU, while the women's Varsity 4 came in second behind the Cougars. The teams battled a steadily growing headwind that ended the day at about 9 miles per hour.
For the men, the V8 squad of Steven Peterson, Cole Garcia, Walker Capra-Smith, Alex Yuska, Bryce Dillon, Connor Murray, Jack Arata, Eric Engel and Atticus Patterson turned in a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds over the 5,000-meter course to defeat the Cougars by 27 seconds. In the Second Varsity 8 race, GU was nipped by just three seconds with their time of 16:35. The men's Third Varsity 8 had a time of 17:02 on the day.
"The guys performed very well today with the limited water time we've had, especially the novices," men's head coach Dan Gehn said. "They should be very pleased with the racing."
On the women's side, Gonzaga's top rowers split into two Fours, with the Varsity 4 'A' squad of Karly Doughtery, Kara Soucek, Devyn Bell, Maddie Turbes and Brooklyn Beeler coming in just eight seconds behind Washington State with a time of 18:53. The V4 'B' Gonzaga crew of Hailey Rousseau, Olivia Marsh, Lindey English, Micailah Donner and Ingrid Stansberry turned in a time of 19:04.
"We were pleased with the performance of all the crews today," women's head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "The goal for each crew was to take what the conditions allowed and make their boat go as fast as possible. All crews were pleased with their effort. Head of the Spokane and Fall Family Weekend is a chance for us to share our sport with our greatest supporters. They were treated to great weather and good racing. We can't ask for much more than that."
Also racing on the women's side in a later flight, the GU Second Varsity 8 squad had a time of 17:59 to win the flight, while the Third Varsity 8 came in third in the flight at 19:10.
