MOSCOW, Idaho - The Gonzaga women's and men's track teams had a solid day of fast times and personal records at the Idaho Collegiate meet Friday.
Maggie Jones won the women's mile and 3,000-meter races. The senior eased to a first place finish in the mile with a time of 5:09.12, nearly 25 seconds in front of second place. Later in the day, she crossed the line at 10:16.44 to win the 3,000 meters.
"Those wins were a really a nice boost for (Maggie's) confidence" Gonzaga women's track Head Coach Patty Ley said. "It has been a year since she has raced track so finding those ‘legs' again is great."
Also in the 3,000, Katy Culver (10:47.81), Julie Henling (10:57.33), and Christina Winters (11:15.12) all had personal records placing third, fourth, and sixth among Div. I runners.
Zac Garrard ran the fourth fastest time in program history in the men's 800 meters. The sophomore finished third in the event with a time of 1:55.37. He moved from fourth to the second in the last straight away. The top four spots were within .6 seconds of each other requiring a photo finish. Idaho's Morgan Choate placed first at 1:55.18.
The Zags swept the top three spots of NCAA Div. I runners in the men's 3,000 meters. Ned Fischer crossed the line at 8:28.19, just in front of Dillon Quintana's 8:41.57 and Ben Stout's 8:44.98. Quintana and Stout both ran personal records, with Stout's being by 10 seconds.
"We had a very good day for young and developing distance runners," Director of Gonzaga's track program Pat Tyson said.
In the men's mile, Jerry Sicalo finished at 4:26.07. He placed second in the race among Div. I runners. Claren Fraher had another second place finish. She crossed the line at 61.81 in the women's 400 meters.
"I feel really good about our performance in a low key meet," Ley said. "It allowed us to continue to develop while establishing confidence in the training. We will take a very small group to UW next week, and then hope to have the bulk of the team ready to race at WSU in two weeks."
Gonzaga returns to University of Washington's Dempsey Center next Friday and Saturday. The two-day UW Invitational will be the second of three trips to the Dempsey for the Bulldogs. Live video and results will be available on GoZags.com.
