PULLMAN, Wash.—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team ended its first tournament of the 2014 fall tournament schedule Sunday with a few players playing in the late stages of their brackets of the WSU Cougar Classic at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts in Pullman, Wash.
Alex Bourguignon competed for the Crimson singles flight title, the top singles bracket in the competition. She squared off against Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State, the flight's top seed. The freshman Bourguignon hung tough, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to end her first Division I tournament.
"It was a great tournament for Alex," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "She will definitely take a lot from today."
Also playing in a singles match, Franziska Koehler competed for the Gray singles flight consolation title. She reached the final match via a walkover and played against Boise State's Naomi de Hart for the bracket championship. Koehler won five total games against the Bronco but fell overall 6-4, 6-1.
Bourguignon and Koehler didn't leave Pullman without one last win, however, as the two teamed up to beat Boise State's duo of Megan LaLone and Arianna Paules Adlrey in a doubles consolation match. The pair of Bulldogs won 7-5.
Samantha Polayes also tallied a victory Sunday, beating Montana's Cat Orfanos 6-0, 6-3 in a non-bracketed consolation match.
"It was a very competitive tournament and we were happy with our team's performance," said Gurule. "We will get back to work on Tuesday and are looking forward to our next tournament."
That next tournament will be the ITA Northwest Regionals, which takes place Oct. 10-12 at Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif.
