Junior Varsity 8+ Continues To Impress At IRA Regatta

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing Junior Varsity 8+ boat continues to shine at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta. The Bulldogs second boat place second in their semifinal Saturday and will now row in the Third Level Final Sunday.
"The Junior Varsity continues to impress," stated Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn. "Coach [Mark] Voorhees has done a great job with them leading into the championship. They rowed another gutty race today and rowed through Drexel in the last 250 to take second in their semifinal and made it into the third level final."
Gonzaga crossed the finish line of the 2,000-meter semifinal course in a time of 6:18.638 to edge Drexel for second place. Harvard won the fourth semifinal in 6:16.234 and Drexel had a finish of 6:19.170 to take third.
The Junior Varsity Third Level Final is set for 6:50 a.m. PT Sunday and will also feature Drexel, Syracuse, Dartmouth, Harvard and Stanford.
The Zag Varsity 8+ also put together a good race in their semifinal, finishing fifth in 6:25.456. FIT won the race in 6:11.197.
"The Varsity rowed a good race considering the conditions," explained Gehn. "All the lanes were reseeded because of the very lively side wind. I felt they closed the gap with some of the other teams from the other semifinals. We will get a chance at them tomorrow in the fourth level final."
The Varsity 8+ Fourth Level Final will begin Sunday at 8:40 a.m. PT. Also in the final are Holy Cross, Drexel, Hobart, Dartmouth and San Diego.
