SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Seventh seed Gonzaga University women's tennis was unable to pull the upset against No. 6 University of San Francisco Wednesday at the West Coast Conference Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center in a 4-0 setback.
Eliminated from the tournament, GU ends the year 9-10 overall.
Gonzaga was in contention to win the doubles point to open the match. Katie Edwards and Alexandra Tallas breezed their No. 3 match over Milicia Hadzi-Tanovic and Brook Irish 8-2. The win was the 10th of the year for the Bulldogs tandem.
USF then took the No. 1 contest where Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes went under 8-3 to Andrea Ka and Marina Nikolic. The point came down to the winner of the No. 2 contest where GU's Melanie Yates and Franziska Koelher battled until the final point. Unfortunately, San Francisco's Sofia Holmberg and Thyra Taune clinched the point with an 8-7 victory.
The Bulldogs suffered defeats in the first three singles matches, which clinched the match for the Dons. As a result of the clinch, Edwards', Polayes' and Koehler's matches went unfinished.
The Dons second point came at No. 4 where Tallas was downed 6-4, 6-2 to Nikolic. USF's next final points came at No. 1 where Peek was ousted 6-1, 6-4 to Ka; and No. 6 where Genevieve McCloskey beat Isabell Klingert 7-6, 6-2.
It was quite the year for the program as GU picked up its first national rankings and defeated a ranked opponent for the first time. The Zags look to return the bulk of its young core next year.
