SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team nearly stole the doubles point against University of San Francisco but unfortunately the Zags suffered a 7-0 defeat to the Dons at the Olympic Club Saturday.
Gonzaga slides to an even 3-3 in West Coast Conference matches and to 8-7 overall.
USF claimed the first doubles match at No.2 but GU responded shortly after by taking the No. 3 contest. Katie Edwards and Alexandra Tallas won their eighth match together with the 8-5 victory over Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Brook Irish.
The point came down to the top match between Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes against Andrea Ka and Marina Nikolic. Although competitive, GU fell 8-4 in the match.
The Dons took each of the singles matches as well but the Zags made them earn every point.
At No. 2, Edwards went to three-sets with Thyra Taune. The match came down the wire as Taune escaped with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 winner.
Other singles scores saw Peek fall at No. 1 6-0, 6-1 to Ka; Polayes downed 6-2, 6-1 to Sofia Holberg; Melanie Yates ousted 6-0, 6-0 to Nikolic; No. 5 Isabell Klingert bounced 6-4, 6-3 to Hadzi-Tanovic; Tallas stumbling 6-1, 7-5 to Irish.
GU has a short turnaround to its WCC weekend in the bay area. The Bulldogs head to Santa Clara University Sunday for a 1 p.m. dual.
