LAKE VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing program gained valuable experience against 18th ranked Oregon State University Saturday morning on Lake Vancouver in Vancouver, Wash. The Bulldogs, rowing the Beavers for the second time this spring season, won only one of four races but it came in the final race, allowing the day to end on a high note.
The Zags dropped the Varsity 8+, Junior Varsity 8+ and the Third Varsity 8+ races but regrouped to claim the Freshman 8+ victory.
Oregon State earned the Varsity 8+ win with a finishing time of 5:52.9; the lone sub-six minute time of the day. Gonzaga closed out the 2,000-meter course at 6:03.1.
"The Varsity 8+ rowed poorly today and that was a bit of a letdown for how things have been going," explained Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn. "Oregon State did everything we weren't doing and the times represented that."
The Junior Varsity 8+ race was a tight battle between the two with the Beavers crossing the finish line first at 6:07.0 The Bulldogs had a time of 6:10.0.
"The Junior Varsity 8+ fared better but they let them slip away in the second 500-meters and responded too late to close the gap," stated Gehn.
After the Third Varsity 8+ finished third behind the Beaver A and Beaver B boats, the Freshman 8+ race lined up at the start for the final race of the day.
The Bulldog boat - consisting of rowers from all three previous boats - went on to have the second fastest time of all Gonzaga boats Saturday. The Zags crossed the finish line at 6:04.5, followed by the Oregon State A boat at 6:06.8 and the Oregon State B boat at 6:32.2.
"The Freshman 8+ got the benefit of being able to regroup and go back on the water after all racing in one of the previous three races," said Gehn. "They did a nice job of taking control and dictating the race with about a boat length win."
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, May 3 when they dual with Washington State in Pullman, Wash.
