Men's Rowing Battles Tough Weather At Oregon State Race

DEXTER LAKE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team opened its 2014 spring season Saturday in less than idle conditions - with winds gusting from 15-20 miles-per-hour at the Oregon State University Regatta on Dexter Lake outside of Eugene, Ore.
Despite the atypical weather - a day after perfect conditions on the water - Bulldog head coach Dan Gehn was happy with his team's first outing of the spring.
"I was pleased with the performance for the first time out and in less than ideal conditions," stated Gehn. "We are now looking forward to getting a good week in down in Sacramento."
Saturday's race with Oregon State, that also featured the University of Victoria, was the beginning of spring break for the Zags, which will end next Friday with a race against UC San Diego, Santa Clara and UC Davis at the Port of Sacramento in Sacramento, Calif.
"All three of our boats rowed and raced well in the first 1,250 of the race course," explained Gehn. "The conditions were the best there and deteriorated in the last 750. We just haven't had enough water time yet to handle that in a successful way."
The intense wind on Dexter Lake made for moderate chop in the water the first 1250-meters and heavy rollers and white capping at times in the final 750-meters.
The Third Varsity 8+ started the rowing off for the Zags and placed second with a time of 6:31.4. Oregon State earned the victory at 6:23.9. Victoria's third-place finish was 6:36.4.
The Junior Varsity 8+ and the Varsity 8+ each placed third in their respective races.
The Bulldog JV 8+ crossed the finish line in a time of 6:26.8, while Gonzaga's Varsity 8+ ended its race at 6:11.9.
Victoria won the marquee Varsity 8+ race at 5:57.0, while the Beavers earned the Junior Varsity 8+ victory in 6:19.8.
