SAN BRUNO, Calif.—For the second straight year, senior Clark Phillips earned West Coast Conference All-Academic honors while three more Zags picked up All-Academic Honorable Mention, as announced by the conference office Friday.
Phillips earned a spot on the All-Academic team for the second time in as many seasons, and he picked up his third total conference academic award after receiving Honorable Mention in 2012. A senior this year, Phillips has tallied a 3.45 cumulative GPA as an accounting major. On the field he's just as skilled, scoring two goals and adding one assist this season. Playing in his final year, Phillips will leave Gonzaga on the program's top ten lists in both goals scored and total points.
A trio of Zags received All-Academic Honorable Mention honors after strong seasons of their own as Jalen Crisler, Jakob Granlund, and Chris Lowrimore each earned their first academic honor from the WCC. Crisler was named All-Academic in his first year of action for the Zags. A redshirt-freshman, Crisler earned his first start on Sept. 12 at Utah Valley and hasn't relinquished the spot, helping solidify the Zags' backline. With Crisler as a starter, the Zags have posted just a 1.50 goals-against average as opposed to a 2.67 GAA with him coming off the bench. An undeclared business major, Crisler has posted a 3.63 GPA in his year and a half at Gonzaga.
Like Crisler, Granlund also picked up Honorable Mention in his first year of eligibility for the award. A sophomore, Granlund has posted a 3.57 GPA as an undeclared business major. On the field he's played in 14 matches for the Zags, starting 12 of them. The forward has netted two goals and provided two assists, posting a brace in the Zags' 4-2 win over UNLV Sept. 20. His two assists each came during a Zag win as well.
Rounding out the Zags' academic honors, Lowrimore picked up All-Academic Honorable Mention during his first year of sustained play for the Zags. The redshirt junior has played in 12 matches this season, earning 11 starts between the posts. During his 1,017:24 minutes in goal, he's made 45 saves, keeping one clean sheet for himself and preserving another after coming on as a sub. In the classroom, Lowrimore has posted a 3.67 GPA as a human physiology major.
To be considered for a WCC All-Academic honor, each player must hold at least a 3.20 GPA and be enrolled at their institution for at least one year. Also, candidates must be a starter or other significant contributor to the team.
The Gonzaga men's soccer team will wrap up its 2014 season Saturday, Nov. 15, with a match against Portland at 1:00 p.m. on Luger Field. Prior to kickoff, the Zags will honor Phillips and six other seniors playing their final match in a short Senior Day ceremony.
