Zags Wrap up Fall Slate, GU Fall Hidden Dual

SPOKANE, Wash.—The Gonzaga women's tennis team wrapped up its own GU Fall Hidden Dual Sunday, tallying five total wins at The Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash., on their final day of competition before the holiday break.
"This was a good tournament for us," said Gonzaga women's tennis head coach D.J. Gurule. "We played competitively and, most importantly, we learned what we're doing well and what we have to work on before the dual season begins."
The Zags swept their doubles matches for the second straight day Sunday. Alex Bourguignon and Franziska Koehler put together their best doubles round of the tournament, defeating Seattle U's Kristen James and Sari Kwee 8-2. The Zag duo went 3-0 in doubles play throughout the tournament.
Also going 3-0 as a pair was Samantha Polayes and Katie Edwards, who needed a tiebreak for the third win. They beat the Redhawks' Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman 8-7 (6).
Kylie Peek and Melanie Yates picked up their second doubles victory of the weekend Sunday, beating SU's Madison Maloney and Barbara Carey 8-4.
Two Zags tallied additional wins in singles play. Peek beat Lucia Badillos of Idaho 6-1, 6-2 for her third singles victory of the tournament. The senior only dropped one match during all three days, a doubles contest on Oct. 7.
Koehler walked away from the GU Fall Hidden Dual with seven total wins, not dropping a single match. She capped off the weekend with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Idaho's Claire Yang.
Polayes and Bourguignon also played Vandals in singles play Sunday, each falling by similar 6-2, 6-1 scores. Polayes lost to Galina Bykova while Bourguignon fell to Emmie Marx.
With the conclusion of their own tournament, the Zags are now done with the fall tournament season. They will play in one more tournament, but that won't be until January 8-11 at the WSU Maui Hidden Duels. The Zags' first match of the dual season is Friday, Jan. 23, when they host Seattle U at the Stevens Center.
