MORAGA, Calif.—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team concluded its third tournament of the fall Sunday, playing the final day of the SMC Invite at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
In the White doubles consolation semifinal, Alex Bourguignon and Franziska Koehler hung tough but fell to San Jose State's Abbie Pahz and Jessica Willett 8-6. The pair were the only Gonzaga competitors left in one of the tournament's brackets.
In other consolation round robin doubles play, Katie Edwards and Samantha Polayes ended their tournament on a high note, dispatching UC Davis' LaniRae Green and Tiffany Phan in a pro set by a score of 8-3.
All four Zags who played in singles brackets this weekend competed in consolation round robin matches Sunday, and Kylie Peek fought back from a first-set defeat to beat Pacific's Gergana Boncheva. Boncheva won the first set 0-6, but Peek came back to win the second 6-3, and she prevailed in the tiebreaker 10-4 for the 0-6, 6-3, 1-0(4) victory over her West Coast Conference foe.
Koehler, Polayes, and Bourguignon also took part in consolation play Saturday. Koehler won her first set against UC Santa Barbara's Stacy Yam 4-6 but had to retire before the second set could be finished. Polayes, meanwhile, got through her match, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Washington's Grace Ysidora. Bourguignon also won six games in her singles match, falling 6-4, 6-2 to Pacific's Iveta Masarova.
Gonzaga has just one more tournament left on their fall schedule, and they won't have to venture far for it. The Zags will wrap up the Fall 2014 slate at the GU Fall Hidden Duel Classic, their own tournament held at the Stevens Center in Spokane, Wash. That tournament will run Friday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 9.
