MORAGA, Calif.—The Gonzaga University women's tennis team competed against two forces Saturday at the SMC Invite, and neither was particularly kind to the Zags during day two of the tournament held at the Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif.
Rain washed away the morning of competition, not allowing play to begin until Saturday afternoon. Also, a heavy downpour at the end of the day halted some matches while in progress, leaving a busy Sunday slate at the tournament.
In doubles action, both Zag pairs played in the White Consolation draw. Alex Bourguignon and Franziska Koehler advanced to the bracket's semifinals with an 8-3 victory over Gergana and Danielle Zinn. Katie Edwards and Samantha Polayes also competed in the White Doubles consolation, taking Delphin Rouvillois and Zeina El Tawil to a tiebreak before falling 8-7 (5).
Gonzaga wasn't as close in singles play, falling in all four matches. Polayes' run in the Red Singles main flight came to an end against sixth-seeded Julija Lukac of Washington, while Bourguignon fell in straight sets to Natalie Da Silveira of UC Santa Barbara in the Red Singles consolation bracket.
In the White Singles bracket, Kylie Peek saw her main draw action come to an end with a loss to Parmindar Kaur of Saint Mary's, the bracket's fifth seed. In the White Singles consolation, Koehler fell to San Jose State's Jessica Willett.
The Zags will wrap up the SMC Invite on Sunday, Oct. 25. The halted matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. with doubles play to follow.
