Five Bulldogs Named To 2013 WCC All-Academic Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University tennis players Levin Guillermo, Alvaro Nazal and Kylie Peek were all named to their respective 2013 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team announced the conference Tuesday.
Along with Guillermo and Nazal, senior Olivier Jamin was named to the men's WCC All-Academic honorable mention. Alexandra Tallas also received honorable mention accolades for the women.
Guillermo, a senior from Walnut, Calif., carried the highest grade-point average on the men's WCC list. With a 3.96 GPA, Guillermo will graduate with a degree in civil engineering from Gonzaga. On the court, Guillermo has been the model of consistency for the Zags. He wrapped up the year with a 16-13 overall record and was 4-4 in WCC matches.
Nazal has been tremendous for the Bulldogs this year. After breaking the program record for wins in a year, the Santiago, Chile, native, carried a 3.85 GPA in business. Nazal played every match in the No. 1 position for the Zags and was 27-8 overall and 6-2 in WCC contests.
Jamin who has a 3.82 GPA in political science, was a valuable asset for the Zags all year. Jamin concluded the season 14-17 overall and played in the No. 2 and No. 3 position. As one of the team captains, Jamin was a vital part of the No. 1 doubles team during the year.
Peek, a sophomore, earned the academic honor with a 3.87 GPA in public relations. Peek went 7-12 during the spring season a picked up six of her wins from the No. 2 position. In doubles with her partner Katie Edwards, the duo finished 8-6 in the spring as the No. 1 team.
Tallas, also a sophomore, has a 3.72 GPA in education. Tallas and her doubles partner Franziska Koehler made huge strides through the year by finished 6-6 as a tandem in the spring. Tallas played her singles matches in primarily the No. 5 position. She wrapped up the spring season at 6-8.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects 12 individuals to the men's and women's all-academic squad to mirror the all-conference teams. To be nominated, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA based on the most recently completed term at the time of nomination, be at least a sophomore in both academic and athletic standing, and prove to be a significant contributor to his team.
Both squads are now focusing on the WCC Championships held in San Diego, Calif., Apr. 24-27. The ninth seeded men will face fourth-seed Santa Clara University Wednesday at 12:20 p.m. and the ninth-seed women will face fourth-seed San Diego at 9:30 a.m.
