MOSCOW, Idaho - Gonzaga University Indoor Track came into the weekend looking to get a number of runners involved and left the 2013 Vandal Indoor with three victories Saturday.
"We had a lot of our athletes do some test efforts," head coach Pat Tyson said. "I think this weekend we had some things go well for us."
The Zags won both of the 3,000 meter races. In the men's race, Ned Fischer clinched first place with his personal best time of 8:39.75. Right behind him, in third place, was Patrick Richie who had a time of 8:48.00.
In the women's 3,000 meter Zoe Urcadez won her second race of the year by putting up a 10:32.06. Krista Beyer finished second with a 10:36.60 and a total of seven Bulldogs finished the race in under 11 minutes.
"The finish and times of our women in the 3,000 was a definite highlight for us," Tyson said.
The third victory came in the men's mile where the Zags placed first (Robert Walgren, 4:19.6), second (Kyle Branch, 4:20.79), third (Andy Phillips, 4:21.30), fifth (Andrew Walker, 4:22.90) and sixth (Alex Foote, 4:26.45).
"The men had some nice wins today," Tyson said. "We did well in our heats and had a number of guys finishing near the top. Going one-two-three in the mile was another great highlight from the day."
Both the men and women broke the school record for the 4X400 meter race.
The women's team of Kelsey Tracy, Urcadez, Kelly Williams and Alexa Foley placed second overall with a 4:16.41 and beating the previous best of 4:23.58 set at the Idaho Collegiate earlier this season. Joe LaMontagne, Danny Lunder, Ian Goldizen and Ross Wiggins also placed second by beat the previous school record by less than a second with a 3:29.14.
Next up for the team is the Washington Classic in Seattle, Wash., beginning Friday Feb. 8.
