Isabell Klingert Advances To Semifinals At SMC Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - Sophomore Isabel Klingert won two matches Saturday and advanced to the semifinals of the blue singles draw at the Saint Mary's College Invitational to highlight the second day of the tournament for the Gonzaga University women's tennis team.
Klingert's big day began with a valiant 6-0, 6-2 victory over Sarah Steele (University of Washington). In the quarterfinals, Klingert dashed Emily McColl (Sacramento State University) 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. To earn a berth into the finals, she will need to defeat Angela Chen (Washington) Sunday.
Franziska Koehler also had a solid singles day in the blue consolation. She topped Claire Jaramshian (UC Davis) 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. She then dropped Elaine Chesoni (Santa Clara University) 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (2) to move into the semifinals. She faces Paula Kreider (Cal Poly) Sunday.
In the red draw, Samantha Polayes fell in the round of 16. She was defeated by Sofia Holmberg 6-2, 6-1. On Friday, Kylie Peek fell in her opener which put her in the consolation draw Saturday. Unfortunately, she suffered a tough loss to Megan Heneghan (UC Davis) 6-2, 6-2.
Melanie Yates also dropped in her round of 16 contest in the blue flight. Second seed Marina Nikolic (University of San Francisco) triumphed 6-1, 6-4.
Gonzaga fell in both of its doubles matches.
In the white consolation, Yates and Koehler fell to Jennifer Nguyen and Katharina Knoebl (Sacramento State) 8-3. The other loss came in the blue draw where Klingert and Katie Edwards were downed by Nikki Wolny and Stephanie Skaras (Santa Clara) 8-3.
The SMC Invitational concludes Sunday with semifinal and finals action.
