Strong Start At SMC Invitational For Women's Tennis

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team resumed its fall season Friday with seven victories at the annual Saint Mary's Invitational.
The Bulldogs had a strong day in both singles (four wins) and doubles (three wins).
The tournament opened with doubles competition with the Zags competing in three different flights. In the red flight, Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes went 1-1. They opened with tight winner 8-7 (4) over Audrey Leitz and Catherine Leduc (Saint Mary's College). Unfortunately the pair would fall 8-5 in the quarterfinals to Danielle Silva and Katie Le (Santa Clara University).
Over in the white flight, Melanie Yates and Franziska Koehler would also go 1-1. The duo fell in the opener 8-3 to Freddie Sleiffer and Tiffany Pham (UC Davis) before rebounding nicely 8-5 in the consolation draw over Bryn Bacharach and Jennifer Cornea (Cal Poly).
Isabell Klingert and Katie Edwards prevailed in their lone doubles contest. The pair downed Natalie Allen and Sarah Steele (University of Washington) 8-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Gonzaga continued its consistent play into singles action.
The red flight saw Polayes advance in the opening round and Peek coming up short. Polayes ousted Olivia Boija (Sacramento State University) 6-3, 6-0. She will face Sofia Holmberg (University of San Francisco) Saturday. Peek was dropped by Cessi Estlander (Cal) 6-2, 6-2; but she will continue to play in the consolation draw.
Edwards entered as the top seed in the white draw and played as such. She went over Reka Rohonyi (Loyola Marymount Univesity) 6-1, 6-2. She faces Rike Shimizu (University of Washington) in the round of 16. Yates also advanced in her contest. She topped Francis Dean (University of the Pacific) 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Her next match is against second seed Marina Nikolic (San Francisco).
Lastly, in the blue draw Klingert moved on while Koehle fell. Klingert advanced 6-3, 6-0 over Kammy Kecki (UC Davis). She draws Sarah Steele (Washington). Koehler battled but came up shy 6-4, 6-4 to Brooke Irish (San Francisco). Her weekend continues from the consolation draw.
The Saint Mary's Invitational continues early Saturday morning and will run all day.
