SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University track team wasted no time in showing its depth Saturday at the University of Washington Preview.
"We have not seen some of our kids in four weeks," head coach Pat Tyson said. "They did a great job on their own over break and I was very impressed. We ran hard today and had some nice times. It was a great team debut and a solid way to start the season. We showed a lot of depth, which will keep getting us ready for the spring."
In the men's 3,000 meter, it was Tate Kelly who finished 9th overall with a personal best 8:22.61. Right behind Kelly was Robert Walgren who placed 11th with a time of 8:23.98, Andrew Walker who took 13th at 8:24.79 and Conor McCandless finishing 16th with his time of 8:26.68. Each runner's time places them in the top five fastest times in program history.
The women were also very successful in the 3,000 meter. In each section the Bulldogs competed in, a runner placed in the top three. Emily Thomas won section 3 and finished 13th overall with a time of 9:54.13. Lara Tuthill finished second in section 2 at 10:34.26 and behind her in third was Krista Beyer with a 10:34.64. Alison Fraher and Meghan Blanchet finished atop section one with 10:43.70 and 10:51.62, respectively.
In the men's mile Danny Lunder took 4th in section 2 at 4:21.79 and Alex Foote took 2nd in section 1 with a 4:24.89. For the women, Zoe Urcadez finished 10th with her time of 5:14.78.
The men's 800 meter featured Andy Phillips who placed 9th at 1:56.37. The women had one lone runner, Kelsey Tracy, who finished in 2:28.16.
"We hoped the team was ready to go and they came out and showed it," assistant coach Patty Ley said. "This is a great starting place and we have a lot to build on. I am really impressed and we are starting off way further than we were last year."
The Bulldogs head to Moscow, Idaho next Saturday for the Idaho Collegiate.
