SALEM, Ore. - Emily Thomas set her second school record and Chris Boyle got into the act as well at the West Coast Invitational that ended late Saturday night to bring the curtain down on the 2011 track season for Gonzaga University.
Thomas, who broke Jill Semenza's 5,000 meter record April 30, erased another Semenza record when she finished fifth in the 10,000 meters in 36:03.13 in the final women's event. Semenza held the record of 36:11.21 set in 2005.
Boyle, who missed the 5,000 meter record by a little more than a second at the Oregon Relays April 22, made no mistake this time in finishing fifth in 14:33.87 to topple Joe Miller's mark of 14:34.72 set in 2005.
Miller and Semenza married in 2008 and currently live in Burlington, Vt.
Kayla Lloyd and Lauren Bergam also achieved personal bests in the 10,000 meters. Lloyd finished in 38:05.67 to better her previous time of 39:37.60 set earlier this year, and Bergam finished in 39:11.93 to improve on her 40:41.43 set earlier this season.
Matt Bejar, Anthony Galvan and Michael Morgan also joined Boyle with career bests. Bejar, a senior, finished 10th in 14:46.86 to end his career on a high note in bettering his mark of 14:48.03 set at the Oregon Relays this season. Galvan took a little more than a second off his previous best of 15:39.35 in finishing in 15:38.14, and Morgan chopped nearly 10 seconds off his time of 15:53.76 with a 15:44.09 Saturday.
Several other Bulldogs had personal bests. Jordan McCann (2:20.29), Kristi Leahy (2:25.20) and Traci Leahy (2:25.64) ran PR's in the 800 meters. Senior Laura Volcheff (17:15.45), Virginia Whalen (18:32.40), Meghan Blanchet (18:48.12) and Molly Moore (19:03.28) all improved their times in the 5,000 meters. Volcheff knocked nearly 15 seconds off her previous best of 17:30.34, Whalen improved her time by more than 12 seconds off her previous mark of 18:44.78 and Blanchet erased five seconds off her time of 19:43.18.
