PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened its season Friday at the Washington State University Cougar Classic. Five Zags advanced to the round of 16 in the two singles draws.
After missing last season due to injury, redshirt sophomore Madeline Parker returned to the court defeating Portland State University's Kylea Gleason 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16 of the Gray Singles. Also advancing are senior Jackie Tabb, sophomores Taurie Bjerken and Gabrielle Verspieren. Junior Kristina Zauere defeated host Washington State's Olga Musilovich 6-2, 6-1 in the third round of the Crimson Singles draw.
In doubles competition, senior Rika Mehndiratta and redshirt junior Prue Teitzel played an intense match but defeated Air Force Academy's Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke 9-8 to advance to the quarterfinals in the Crimson Doubles draw.
"I am happy with the way we competed," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We did a lot of things well and overall I was pleased with our effort. We had a couple of good wins and some close losses."
The Zags resume play at the Cougar Classic Saturday.
