PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team resumed play at Washington State University's Cougar Classic Saturday.
After opening the season Friday with a strong start, the Bulldogs saw a couple of runs come to an end.
Senior Rika Mehndiratta and redshirt sophomore Prue Teitzel fell just short of reaching the Crimson Doubles championship match. The duo lost an intense 8-2 match to the Cougars' Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras. Four Zags saw their singles run come to an end in the third round.
Sophomores Gabrielle Verspieren, Taurie Bjerken and redshirt sophomore Madeline Parker each fell a Cougar while senior Jackie Tabb lost to the University of Montana's Madeline Murray.
Parker and sophomore Britta Stime started the day in the second round of the Gray Doubles Consolation draw. Parker and Stime picked up an 8-2 win over Washington State's Jackie Owens and Jessica Gomez. But the University of Idaho's Silvia Irimescu and Jana Siwa eliminated the duo 8-2 in the next round.
In singles play, senior Rika Mehndiratta defeated Montana State University's Charlotta Hjalmarrson 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the opening round of the Second Round Consolation Crimson. In the same bracket, senior Clare Dodge defeated Eastern Washington's Nefeli Diamanti 6-1, 6-1 to advance.
