SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Darkness halted play in the second round of the Cowboy Classic men's golf tournament Monday with teams on the course with anywhere from one to three holes remaining to be played.
Teams will complete the second round Tuesday morning then play the scheduled final round at Talking Stick Golf Course, North Course, which is a 7,133-yard layout playing to par 70.
Gonzaga University was in a four-way tie for eighth after the first round with a 284 as the Bulldogs welcomed Kyle Huus back after a two-tournament hiatus due to a shoulder injury.
Huus, playing his first competitive golf since Feb. 23, shot an opening-round 68 to pace the Bulldogs. Jason Azzarito shot 71, Kevin PArkhurst 72, Derek Cheney a 73 and Francis Santiago a 77.
Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray was pleased with what his team accomplished Monday.
"We played a solid first round," Gray said. "We stayed patient in the second round which was played in high winds. Kyle put together a great first round and Jason and Kevin also played a solid first round."
Gray said his squad must improve its putting if the Bulldogs hope to move up in the team standings Tuesday.
"We didn't have much luck making putts but these greens can do that to you. The weather is supposed to be a little cooler Tuesday and the winds are expected to die down, so it should be a good day to post some good scores," Gray said.
A record 24 teams and 130 individuals opened play in the tournament, with UC Santa Barbara holding the team lead at 275 through the first round. The University of Oklahoma and University of Colorado were four strokes back in second.
The University of Nevada's Taylor Coffman shot an opening-round 65 for the first-round lead for a 1-stroke lead over a trio of golfers.
