VALLEJO, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team struggled the final six holes of the first round, and that hampered the Bulldogs as they finished Monday's 36 holes of the West Coast Conference Championship in sixth place.
The Bulldogs had rounds of 314 and 309 on a windy day at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club, but Gray didn't blame the weather as much as he did his team's inability to finish.
"We didn't finish our final six holes in the first round the way we needed to," Gray said. "We made too many big numbers and need to take care of those things if we're going to have a chance to finish sixth or better."
Derek Cheney and Kyle Huus each shot 153 for Monday's 36 holes to tie for 18th heading into Tuesday's final round. Cheney shot 79-74 and Huus 76-77 over the 6,689-yard, par 72 layout. Francisco Santiago shot 158 with a pair of 79s and is tied for 30th, and Jason Azzarito and Kevin PArkhurst are each at 160 and tied for 34th. Azzarito had rounds of 81-79 and Parkhurst shot a pair of 80s.
Pepperdine University has an 11-shot lead over the University of San Francisco for team honors, the Waves shooting a 584. Josh Anderson of Pepperdine is the individual leader at 143 for a 1-stroke lead over a pair of pursuers.
Gonzaga is four strokes ahead of the University of Portland, but the Bulldogs need to make up 22 strokes on Saint Mary's College in their bid to finish fifth.
"We need to clean some things up if we're going to have a chance to finish sixth or higher," Gray said heading into Tuesday's final round.
