Gonzaga Gets Solid Performances At Montana Open Track Meet

MISSOULA, Mont. - Gonzaga University's track and field team had one of its best all-around performances of the season Saturday at the Montana Open at Dornblaser Field on the University of Montana campus.
One of the best showings of the day came in the women's 5000 meters where Laura Volcheff and Brittany O'Regan had a two-three finish to lead a strong Gonzaga contingent in the event.
Volcheff finished in 18:16.19 while O'Regan was third in 18:24.47. Lacey Nation was sixth in 19:04.59 and Jamie Van Lith finished eighth in a career-best 19:37.33.
Brenn Donnelly took fourth in the women's 1500 meters for the Bulldogs in a career-best 4:49.00 and Elizabeth Slamkowski was 10th in a career-best 5:05.30.
On the men's side, Luke Koch finished fifth in the 200 meters in 23.21 and was followed closely by Mitchell Fry in sixth in 23.49 and Joel Betonte in 23.50, Fry and Betonte setting career bests and Koch missing his by 0.1. Koch tied for fourth but was given fifth on a judge's decision.
Gonzaga had a strong showing in the 1500 meters as Brett Withers finished seventh in 4:03.07, just missing his career best of 4:03.06. He had two teammates on his heels with Jared Christian eighth in 4:03.83 and Matt Bejar ninth in 4:03.84, both setting career bests with Bejar shaving nearly 8 seconds off his previous best of 4:11.60. Chris Boyle was 11th in a career PR of 4:05.64.
Tony KArafiat finished seventh in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:35.97, shattering his previous career best of 11:02.66. Taylor Goade was his first career race in the event and was eighth in 10:37.81.
The Bulldogs had three runners in the top 10 of the 5,000 meters led by Ben Lance in seventh in 16:05.06. Ian Berge was ninth in 16:15.23 and Cameron O'Neil 10th in 16:17.96.
The next action for the Zags will be Saturday at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Washington State University.
