Men's Rowing To Race WSU In Annual Fawley Cup

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's rowing team, back from a successful trip to the East Coast, hits the road this time for a short drive to Wawawai Landing for the Fawley Cup, a yearly dual against Washington State University, Saturday afternoon.
FAWLEY CUP SCHEDULE:
Saturday, April 17 - Wawawai Landing - Pullman, Wash.
4 p.m. - Novice 8+
4:10 p.m. - Junior Varsity 8+
4:50 p.m. - Varsity 8+
5 p.m. - Second Novice 8+
DIRECTIONS TO WAWAWAI LANDING:
- From Highway 195 (north or south), turn west on Wawawai Road at the blinking yellow light.
- Travel on Wawawai Road for 10 miles, the road will end at a stop sign.
- Turn right and drive six miles down into the canyon.
- Go past the county park on the right and over the railroad tracks.
- The boathouse is a cinderblock building on the right.
- Park on the side of the road or in the parking lot south of the boathouse.
HISTORY OF THE FAWLEY CUP: Gonzaga University men's rowing has won 19 out of the last 21 Fawley Cup's. The Fawley Cup is awarded to the annual winner of the Varsity 8+ race. The Bulldogs handedly defeated Washington State in 2009, leading from the start and extended its margin of victory to 18 seconds. The Zags crossed the finish line at 6:01, while the Cougars were clocked at 6:19.42.
FALL RESULTS VERSUS WASHINGTON STATE: The Gonzaga University men's rowing team faced Washington State University three times this past fall. The Bulldogs opened their fall season hosting the Head of the Spokane where they swept the Cougars in all three races. In the marquee Varsity 8+ race, the Zags won in a time of 16:15.02, while the Cougs finished the course in 16:19.0. The next weekend, Gonzaga again raced Washington State at the Head of the Snake, hosted by WSU. GU won three of four races, but fell in the Varsity 8+ race. GU also faced Washington State at the Head of the Lake, hosted by the University of Washington. WSU placed fifth in the Varsity 8+, just ahead of GU who earned a sixth place finish.
QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH Dan Gehn ON UPCOMING FAWLEY CUP: "Clearly Washington State is one of the strongest teams in the WIRA conference, it might even be the one to beat. It is going to be a very tough race and we look to Saturday afternoon to find out where we stand."
RECEIVING VOTES: Gonzaga University men's rowing continues to receive votes in the USRowing Collegiate Top 20. The Bulldogs garnered two votes this week, to be one of seven institutions also receiving votes.

Second Varsity 8+: Crystal Huff, Jeremy Lazzara, Frankie Russo, Julian Stephanski, David Wayne, Tyler Mendiola, Mike Gore, Will Griffith, Evan Winiger.
Freshman 8+: Due to injuries the Freshman 8+ lineup has yet to be set.
