Stime, Verspieren Win Doubles Title At SMC Fall Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team resumed play at the Saint Mary's College Fall Invitational Saturday. Sophomores Britta Stime and Gabrielle Verspieren highlighted the day by winning the ITA Blue Doubles title.
After eliminating the University of San Francisco's Andrea Gaitan and Jessy Mekpoh 8-3 in the semifinals, Stime and Verspieren defeated UC Davis' Melisa Kobayakawa and Noelle Eades 8-2 to claim the doubles title.
Stime also had a strong performance in singles play. In the ITA Blue Singles quarterfinals she defeated Tami Tan of the Dominican University of California 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. She will face Blair Reed of the Dons Sunday.
The Bulldogs also produced wins in the consolation brackets. Verspieren defeated Santa Clara University's Elaine Chesoni 6-4, 6-3 in the ITA Blue Singles quarterfinals and will take on Carolina O'Haren in the semifinals. In the ITA White Singles quarterfinals, junior Kristina Zauere defeated Melinda Akerbrant of the Dons 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals where she will face Santa Clara's Kelly Lamble.
In doubles competition, Zauere and senior Clare Dodge earned a pair of wins in the ITA White Doubles bracket. They defeated UC Davis' Shawdee Rouhafza and Sidney Brady 8-1 in the quarterfinals and Loyola Marymount University's Estelle LaPorte and Miya Jin 8-6 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. They will take on Eleanor Edles and Lauren Curry of the Aggies.
"We played smart tennis today," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "I was pleased with our focus and we made some good changes from yesterday."
The Bulldogs will conclude the tournament Sunday.
