MACON, Ga. - Gonzaga University's youngsters of Travis Johnsen and Peter Gullickson continued their steady play, each shooting a second-round 73 Saturday at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship men's golf tournament over the par 7,128-yard, par 72 Brickyard at Riverside Golf Course.
Johnsen, a sophomore who shot an opening-round 69, is tied for eighth at 142 and just four shots off the lead heading into Sunday's final round of the 54-hole event. Gullickson, a freshman, is at 147 and tied for 24th.
Kyle Huus, who had an opening-round 81, battled back with a 73 Saturday as the Bulldogs shot a 302 and are 14th at 600 after 36 holes.
"Travis held steady today and Peter posted another solid score," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. "It's great to see the young guys playing well and making a big impact on the team."
Gullickson was at 2-under until four straight bogeys on holes two through five (he started the day on the 10th hole) dropped him to 2-over before making birdie on the 7th hole, his 16th hole of the round.
Johnson had three birdies and three bogeys in his first nine holes, then played par golf the rest of the way with the exception of a bogey on No. 7, his 16th hole of the day.
Gray was also pleased to see Huus, who has held the No. 1 spot on the team most of the past two seasons, post a solid second round.
"Kyle bounced back after yesterday like he has in our previous events this fall," Gray said.
Huus, a senior, had four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on his way to 73.
The University of Georgia shot a second-round 284 for a 36-hole score of 571 and a 9-stroke lead over rival Georgia Tech. Russell Henley of the Georgia version of Bulldogs is the individual leader at 138 after rounds of 72-66.
Gray said the course was a little more challenging Saturday.
"The course played a little tougher today with some tough pin placements so we didn't lose too much ground," said Gray, whose squad is only nine shots out of ninth. "Our goal is to be consistent with our team scoring for each round this week. Today we had three guys shoot one over but didn't get the fourth we needed. However, we still have the opportunity to have a decent finish this week against a very strong field. If we're going to move up, we're going to need four solid scores. We haven't had a great single round team score yet, but we've been close. Hopefully, tomorrow we'll get it."
Ten of the 15 teams in the field played in the post-season last year.
